Careers

Senior Silicon Photonics Engineer

Pointcloud develops technologies that enable machines to see the world in 3 dimensions. Started in 2017 in San Francisco, the company has developed the first integrated 3D imaging sensor based on a coherent focal plane array architecture. From the first results published in early 2021 in the journal Nature, the technology has seen rapid increase in interest from a wide range of partners and applications, covering automotive, robotics and augmented reality/consumer. In 2022, the company is moving into its next stage of development with the opening of its R&D offices in Zurich, Switzerland where sensors for different markets will be developed. If it sounds like an exciting challenge, we would like to hear from you.

As Senior Silicon Photonics Engineer you will be working with our Photonics engineers, Mixed Signal Circuit Design, and SW/Signal Processing teams to define the optical architecture of our 3D imaging optoelectronic chip, and iterate on successive implementations. The role will involve hands-on design, simulation, and testing, as well as management of relationships with our external manufacturing partners, vendors and research partners.

Responsibilities

  • Design, and simulate the optical component, block and system level functionality and performance of our optoelectronic System on a Chip (SoC),
  • Prototype novel optical components and architectures, evaluate their performance and collaborate with the Mixed Signal Circuit Design engineers to integrate them into the optoelectronic SoC design
  • Develop the component and system level optical functionality testing plans for our chips; perform hands on testing of optical components, work with product and test engineers to transition and scale test methodologies to characterize the optical functionality and performance
  • Collaborate with our manufacturing partners on prototyping, optimization and transition into volume manufacturing of our optoelectronic SoC
  • Contribute to the expansion of our IP portfolio through patent filing
  • Identify, hire and mentor junior engineers

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of planar waveguide optics, both passive components such as waveguides, multiplexers/demultiplexers, tapers, couplers and active such as waveguide detectors and modulators
  • Good understanding of CMOS manufacturing process steps and constraints on the design of photonic devices
  • Proficient with mainstream photonic components and systems simulation packages such as Lumerical, or RSoft
  • Proficient with complex optoelectronic lab testing techniques and equipment, necessary to validate designs, including high speed detectors, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, precision positioning setups and so on
  • Collaborative in a multi-disciplinary environment, ability to work both with local and remote team members as well as with our manufacturing partners
  • Capable of coaching and mentoring new or junior engineers;
  • Independent, analytical thinker, comfortable in a frontier technology environment,
  • Self-motivated,
  • Top tier M.S. program in Optics, Physics, or EE, with research in silicon photonics with 6+ years of relevant experience, preferably top tier Ph.D. in Optics, Physics or EE, with research in silicon photonics with 2+ years’ experience; industry experience desired

What we offer

  • Opportunity to shape the development of a foundational technology with wide market impact from robotics and autonomous mobility to augmented reality and consumer applications
  • Exciting and diverse work, a friendly and dynamic environment, opportunities for development
  • Competitive salary and equity
